Planboo Sri Lanka Biochar
Story

Leading the 'biocharge' in Sri Lanka with verified carbon removal from bamboo and agriculture plant waste biochar.

Planboo is on a mission to scale carbon removal while improving agricultural soil health in the tropics with biochar and compost. Over the past 9 months, Planboo has been teaching large tea, cinnamon, and rubber plantations in Sri Lanka to produce biochar to boost their compost production. From designing and fabricating kilns to finding the perfect blends of organic liquid compost, the local team is now ready to scale their solution throughout the country.

In 2021 the Sri Lankan government banned the import of chemical fertilisers overnight, sighting economic and environmental concerns. What became immediately apparent was how addicted the crops had become to fertilisers and the poor state of the soils they were surviving in. Crops went cold turkey and yields were down by 60%! The knock-on impact worsened the economic situation, leading to countrywide protests forcing the majority of politicians to resign including the President.

By purchasing carbon removal credits from Planboo Sri Lanka biochar project, you will enable more landowners to start restoring soil health, improving crop yields, and providing much-needed foreign income at a time when the country is on the brink of economic collapse. Planboo uses a first of its kind, EBC accredited methodology ensuring the highest standard for monitoring, reporting and verification in carbon removal.
